CLAIRE DIAN
COSTUME DESIGNER
Born in Paris on September the 26th of 1996, I developed an interest for drawing, art and cinema at a very young age. In Highschool, I realized that costume could be the best way to deal with all of my different passions. After my graduation, I studied Applied Arts for a year at the Duperré School (Paris) where I explored, among others, textile design, embroidery, the study of colors and fashion history.
My ambition to become a Costume Designer was now clear but, without any sewing skills, I assumed I was lacking of knowledge about this job. I studied Costume Making for two years at the Lycée Paul Poiret (Paris), getting more familiar with pattern cutting, corset making or tailoring. I learned as much as I could about the costume industry at school and during internships.
With this experience, I then entered the National School of Theatre’s Arts and Techniques, ENSATT (Lyon) to follow a Master of Art in Costume Design. During this degree, I learned about natural dying techniques, distressing and aging, millinery making, dramaturgy, history of costume and designed costumes for several projects. Thanks to my studies and numerous internships, I have now a better comprehension of the world of Performing Arts.

COSTUME DESIGN
Since always, I was passionated by drawing. I worked my best to get a keen eye and be able to reproduce bodies, draping and fabrics. I first aspired to become a comic-book artist, interested by the narrative power of a well constructed image. Later, my taste for cinematography and performing arts lead me to choose Costume Design as a career path. With a drawing, with one costume, we are sometimes able to tell everything that a character does not.
To me, drawing is another language that allows communication with a creative team. The design, it’s the costume as created after a profound study of a text, researches and a selection of inspirations. It’s also a tool for the workshop, during fittings and the creative process, an help to find the best technical solutions for the best artistic result. The costume design is the outcome of the costume's conception, the genesis of its making.

NATURAL DYING
I was initiated to the art of natural dying by Sandrine Rozier at the ENSATT. I am now proud to consider this technique in my work as a costumer
Using plants extracts, natural dye offers a very large color chart full of vivid colors. A certain mastering of plant’s chemistry allow us to intervene on the colors already obtained to access different shades.
Coming in the form of powders, plant’s extracts are very easy to use. They can be measured precisely to be used in the most efficient way. Used in a bath to get homogenous fabric or tie-and-dye effects or made into a paste to be painted or applied with a stencil, plants offer numerous possibilities.
I am please to practice natural dying, an artisanal and environmentally friendly technique. Furthermore, this technique is in adequacy with my researches on Costuming Antiquity.
